“The magnetic storm that is soon to develop probably will be in the moderate to strong level,” said Joseph Kunches, a space weather scientist at the Space Weather Prediction Center, a division of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

He said solar storms this week could affect communications and global positioning system (GPS) satellites and might even produce an aurora visible as far south as Minnesota and Wisconsin.

An aurora, called aurora borealis or the northern lights in northern latitudes, is a natural light display in the sky in the Arctic and Antarctic regions caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere.

Major disruptions from solar activity are rare but have had serious impacts in the past.

In 1989, a solar storm took down the power grid in Quebec, Canada, leaving about six million people without power for several hours.

The largest solar storm ever recorded was in 1859 when communications infrastructure was limited to telegraphs.

The 1859 solar storm hit telegraph offices around the world and caused a giant aurora visible as far south as the Caribbean Islands.

Some telegraph operators reported electric shocks. Papers caught fire. And many telegraph systems continued to send and receive signals even after operators disconnected batteries, NOAA said on its website.

A storm of similar magnitude today could cause up to $2 trillion in damage globally, according to a 2008 report by the National Research Council.

“I don’t think this week’s solar storms will be anywhere near that. This will be a two or three out of five on the NOAA Space Weather Scale,” said Kunches.

SOLAR SCALE

The NOAA Space Weather Scale measures the intensity of a solar storm from one being the lowest intensity to five being the highest, similar to scales that measure the severity of hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes.

The first of the three solar explosions from the sun this week already passed the Earth on Thursday with little impact, Kunches said, noting, the second was passing the Earth now and “seems to be stronger.”

And the third, he said, “We’ll have to see what happens over the next few days. It could exacerbate the disturbance in the Earth’s magnetic field caused by the second (storm) or do nothing at all.”

Power grid managers receive alerts from the Space Weather Prediction Center to tell them to prepare for solar events, which peak about every 12 years, Tom Bogdan, director of the center said.

He said the next peak, called a solar maximum, was expected in 2013.

“We’re coming up to the next solar maximum, so we expect to see more of these storms coming from the sun over the next three to five years,” Bogdan said.

Just this year the Interphone study, an international research project that has been ongoing for many years, finally released data that backs the findings of others that said cell phones are dangerous for everyone and should be of concern to anyone, especially users of more than average use.
Even with that information, CEFALO a case study conducted in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Switzerland had been working on determining if children from 7-19 years of age who were diagnosed with a brain tumor between 2004 and 2008 were related to cell phone use. They just released their report today in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute “Mobile Phone Use and Brain Tumors in Children and Adolescents: A Multicenter Case–Control Study”
The report was summarized by the group as not showing any significant causes of cell phone use in children who used cell phones and happen to have brain tumors. Yet everyone who actually read the report said they seemed to disagree with the summary of it that was presented to the public. The paper will appear in the August 17th issue of JNCI.
It is reported by many in the industry that the CEFALO study fell short of meeting its necessary 550 cases of children to study versus the 352 that were. A significant statistical difference would have been seen according to the reports.
Even members of the CEFALO study, Martin Roosli and Robert Tarone, said they believe there is some systematic error and if asked to do this kind of study again that they would not do it and prefer to do a prospective studies case in which it would make more sense to clarify the data. They stated that was a lot of the confusion in the Interphone study that was previously released already and saw many headaches with agreements on the data.
Practically no doctor or researcher actually believes these studies are representing the data correctly and believe the other types of future studies will once and for all put the matter to rest, as least for recognizing the need at a national or worldwide safety regulation stance to make it clear what is really being seen. Doctors and researchers who see real life data do recommend that children under 12 should not use cell phones except for an emergency. Keeping it turned off until they need to use it is the best way. Although most people know children unsupervised will more than likely try to use them. Once the data is 100% settled and not misconstrued by the telecommunications industries, safety, and regulatory parties, even then it will take time to convince children and parents that they should take precautionary measures.
It is known the amount of radiation that enters a child’s brain from a cell phone is double the amount that enters adults during cell phone usage. The questions have centered around was the type of radiation dangerous and that has been proven. The only thing not completely settled is a study showing the two related.<
As mentioned, for over 10-20 years now telecommunications companies, governments, safety and health organizations have been infiltrated with lobbyist who have been able to hold back or prevent the studies from releasing data at all or with misinformation. The responsibility, as has been for many years, is in the hands of the everyday citizen to monitor these studies and take matters in their own hands, just try to minimize the cell phone use in those hands.

Dr. Teo says: “If the question is do I believe that mobile phones can cause brain cancer? The answer is yes, I do.” Teo also gives this warning: “I’m incredibly worried, concerned, depressed at the number of kids I’m seeing coming in with brain tumors. Malignant brain tumors. Just in the last three or four weeks I’ve seen nearly half a dozen kids with tumors which really should have been benign and they’ve all been nasty, malignant brain tumors. We are doing something terribly wrong.”

Dr. Khurana says: “The use of mobile phones is associated with a doubling of the risk of being diagnosed

with a brain tumor over ten years, that is what the data that we have analyzed shows.” He also noted that mobile phones could be the biggest public health issue since tobacco. Further he adds, “I think that doubling the risks could be a conservative estimate. I would be very happy to be wrong about this because the public health implications of being right about this are enormous. There are just over 4 billion mobile phone users and people as young as three years old using them.”

The young age of cell phone users is probably the biggest concern for the doctors now as they are seeing a rise in children with brain tumors. According to Dr. Lennart Hardell of Sweden, his research has shown that children under the age of 20 that begin using a cell phone continuously for 10 years has  were five times more likely to develop a “glioma”, a type of brain tumor. The extra risk to young people of contracting the disease from using the cordless phone found in many homes was almost as great, at more than four time higher.”
